Product Description
Protect your RC aircraft investment with a Marco Polo RC Model Recovery System. Marco Polo is the only long range, up to 2 miles line-of-sight, tracking system that works everywhere you fly – or unintentionally land – with no need for GPS reception or cellular service and no monthly fees. The Marco Polo tag transceiver weighs just 12 grams so it will not affect your aircraft’s performance yet it gives you up to 10 days to locate your model. Marco Polo will not interfere with any of your on-board radio systems because it does not transmit any RF energy until activated by the hand-held locator from the ground. In the case of a long-range fly away you can place the locator into search mode and head off in the general direction of the crash or perform a grid search, Marco Polo will search every inch of the surrounding area as you move and then guide you to the exact location, within inches. Up to 2 additional tag transceivers can be added to the system at any time and the Marco Polo locator is compatible with both RC and pet tracking tags.

I ran some tests on battery life and after 10 days the transmitter it is still running and responding when I ping it. I will update the post with the exact number of days until the battery dies and needs recharging, but so far it has passed the manufactures ten day statement :)
I tried it out on a distance test and with several concrete structure in the way I was able to get a signal from about 1/2 mile out with 44% signal. I am a amateur radio operator so I can say with a fair degree on confidence that this would have no problems working at 2 miles out if it was line of sight. For me the test that I was more interested in was how it worked when blocked by lots of obstacles, because in the real world crash you are most likely not going to have a clear line of sight. The Marco Polo passed my test and my expectations. I was able to use the DJI Go4 app and get within close enough distance that I could then easily use the Marco Polo to locate the Mavic's exact position.
One good thing to know with the Marco Polo is that it does not create any RF interference. The MP is a passive device that listens for a ping from the handheld locator. Once it picks up that ping it starts to transmit back. The time between you first starting to ping and getting back a response is about 20-30 seconds and after that it updates with new direction info every 10 seconds. Surprisingly the direction arrow is pretty darn good. In 80% of the pings it was right on target and in the other 20% it was +/-30 deg of the target. As you move closer the accuracy improves and the signal strength keeps going up, so there is no doubt you are getting closer.
If you own an expensive drone and you fly it out far over land, the Marco Polo RC tracker is really a worthwhile investment.
The product seems very well put together. The locator housing is plastic, but it is thick and feels very solid - not cheap. It seems easy enough to setup and use. To that end, the instructions are fantastic. Easy to understand, good grammar, no misspelling. There is good detail as to how it operates. That's very rare these days. 5 stars just for that.
Product seems to work (tested indoors) although I have not yet tried it outside at some distances yet.
Expensive but would purchase again. It will go on a drone that cost 10x the price.
Given the terrain I'm using the unit in, I personally would highly recommend the Marco Polo
I have not yet used this in the field yet (just got my drone back from a crash in the wild?! :-( ) but I did use it in a nearby field on some practice runs. It is highly advised you do this!! Once your drone flies away, you will be super stressed, and that is not the time to sort out in your mind the vagaries of radio telemetry tracking. Get your practice first. Otherwise, during practice the MP worked as advertised and certainly worked well during my 100 yard test. That said, if you have used a hand held GPS receiver, such as hikers use, you are already aware of signal bounce. That means that while walking along a path of some 20 feet you might read the device as giving conflicting heading directions. If you keep moving forward, you will see that the true direction you need to head will be the one most frequently repeated. Use signal increasing or decreasing signal strength to corroborate that you are heading the correct direction.
BTW, you probably know that when losing the drone, the video feed and the indicated track downloaded to the remote controller are the best clues as to where to begin your search. Use those. Plus, if the drone falls behind a structure or over a hill, you may not get a strong signal from the transmitter. Be flexible in your thinking to properly interpret the information your RC and Marco Polo are giving you.
Finally, finally: I had some initial confusion in setting up the MP. I emailed Eureka and got a reply from within 2 hours. That's speed service and great customer care. This is a company you can have confidence in.
