    Product Description

Navigate with Garmin-caliber GPS data on the mobile device of your choice. GLO brings you the best of both worlds by combining GPS/GLONASS receivers with Bluetooth® technology so you can enjoy precise position information on your iPad, iPhone or Android device.

The Accuracy of GPS + GLONASS

GLO can receive position information from both the GPS and GLONASS satellite constellations, allowing it to connect to up to 24 more satellites than devices that rely on GPS alone. This allows GLO to lock on to satellites approximately 20 percent faster and remain connected even at high speed. What’s more, GLO updates its position information at 10 times per second — that’s up to 10 times more often than the GPS receivers in many mobile devices.

    Set It Up and Go

Using Bluetooth technology, GLO wirelessly pairs to your mobile device. Just set GLO within range of your mobile device, and in moments you’ll be receiving GLO’s position data. It has up to 12 hours of battery life to keep your position on long trips, and charging GLO between uses is easy with the included USB cable or optional 12/24 volt cigarette lighter adapter. The optional friction mount keeps the receiver safe on your dashboard and in full view of satellites.

ALERT -- APR 2015 -- Bluetooth GPS devices stopped working under Apple's iOS 8.3. -- DO NOT USE WITH iOS 8.3 --UPDATE -- JUL 2015 -- Apple fixed the Bluetooth GPS problem in iOS 8.4. I confirmed the GLO works fine on both my iPad and iPhone under 8.4!UPDATE - MAR 2016 -- The GLO continues to work under iOS 9. I've tested it with iOS 9.02, 9.1, and 9.3 and found no issues.UPDATE - May 2017 -- Currently using under iOS 10.3.1. I originally bought the module to use with my WiFi-only iPad, but found today it can help my MapMyHike app on my iPhone 6 resolve my workout distances more accurately. The iPhone 6 (and most smartphones) use a hybrid GPS/Cell Phone Tower location system, which is not all that accurate for someone on foot. Added a picture to illustrate the accuracy increase on the iPhone.BACK TO THE ORIGINAL REVIEW:I bought my Garmin GLO over a year-and-a-half ago, so I have some experience. I use it with a WiFi-only iPad. The GLO is a small, long-lasting, accurate unit with fast updates and great coverage, but it lacks one simple item I think is very important: A battery level indicator in either hardware or software. The power light on the unit will blink about 20 minutes before the battery dies, but that's not enough, IMO. Luckily from my experience it appears you should be able to count on most of the 12 hours they predict, which should outlast most devices it gets paired with. Buy a spare battery for under $20 or an external battery pack, and you should easily get 24-hour coverage! Now, I've had some bumps along the road: The first unit I received stopped communicating after 3 weeks, and was replaced by the one that has lasted the last year-and-a-half. I'm hoping whatever made the first one stop communicating has since been fixed in production. I also had a recharge problem when connected to an external battery pack charger, but that turned out to be the charger (I thought it was the GLO for quite some time). Before writing this review I decided to test the discharge rate of the battery. Can it still last the stated 12 hours? The first test gave me 14 hours and 39 minutes of constant communication with a GPS app on my iPad, so yes! Pretty good for a year-and-a-half old battery. A retest the next day was within a minute: 14 hours and 38 minutes!I have seen zero compatibility issues with this device. It has worked with every map program and GPS utility I have thrown at it -- Apple and Google Maps, Google Earth, ALK Tech's CoPilot GPS, Waze, and MotionX's GPS Drive to name a few. I typically use ALK Tech's CoPilot GPS, because like MotionX's offering, they store maps right on the device so you don't need an Internet connection. Since I have a WiFi-only iPad, there is no Internet connection when I travel. It will even transparently Geotag my photographs! I do wish Garmin provided a utility that, besides showing the battery level I so desire, would also show standard GPS utility info like what satellites it is using, etc. Historically this type of utility has been a great troubleshooting aid.I answered a couple of these in the Q&A section, but here are some additional fixes & tidbits:1) DO NOT USE WITH iOS 8.3 (see ALERT, above).2) The power switch sensitivity you see in many reviews was fixed in firmware in late 2013. That firmware update was stable by early 2014, so all current production models should have it. Unfortunately I haven't been able to update mine. There seems to be a USB issue that is most commonly fixed by attempting the update on another computer. I only have one computer.3) The above firmware update also added support for up to 4 simultaneous Bluetooth connections, and gave the GLO the ability to turn off automatically after five minutes if there are no Bluetooth connections.4) The unit must be powered on to charge. Some people have dead battery issues because they do not realize that. Also, from my experience above, I would play it safe and recharge with a normal 1A power source, not an external battery pack charger. It should normally charge in a little over 3 hours from a normal 1A source, but from deep discharge it may take a while longer.5) You can geotag your photographs (embed the location where the picture was taken) on a WiFi-only iPad. Simply have the GLO turned on and connected when you take a picture (and have the option turned on under Privacy > Location Services > Camera!) Then you just need to carry the GLO in your pocket.6) Someone asked what version of Bluetooth it used, presumably so they could make sure they were compatible. I took mine apart, and it appears to have a Bluetooth 2.1 chip.Hope something here is useful to someone!

I am a private pilot and I fly a lot in various types of weather. My onboard GPS system is great but I wanted to use apps like foreflight and Garmin pilot and my phone gps didn't work all too well. The connection is simple but for most phones and tablets you need an app to enable an external gps source. I use one called "Bluetooth GPS" and it makes the connection seamless. The lights on the device are a little confusing at first, so I'll explain. The unit when powered on will flash blue and green. Green flashing indicates searching for GPS signal and flashing blue when looking for connection. The unit when connected will be solid blue and no other color should show. When charging the device will be a orange (and if not connected, flashing blue). when completed charging it will be a flashing orange. The device will power on when plugged in and will stay on until charged. There is no way to avoid this, and that kind of bothered me since if im charging it in my truck its flashing lights at me. Battery life is great and I have never had it fail mid flight as long as I charged it before hand. I've taken it on 6 hours flights with no problem. It even works when my phone gps fails and im driving. It is far more accurate then the internal gps unit so I connect whenever I need reliability in my directions. Works with both android and apple devices, which is one of the reasons I bought it. It has functioned without failure for 3 years now, great product.

I love this device. On my first trip out I paired it with my wifi-only iPad Air 2's iHikeGPS app, which uses topo maps for visuals. Ignore the gripes about the power switch - this issue has been fixed and the switch works just as it should. I wasn't sure if I would need a belt holster, but turns out the receiver gets a good signal from your pocket. The track was perfect with no gaps or distortion. Having the nice-sized iPad screen showing a track in real time is awesome. Some people may prefer the Bad Elf which attaches directly to the iPad, but I have had good experiences with Garmin, and I'm glad I made this choice.
UPDATE: several weeks after I got this, iOS updated to 8.3 which had a problem pairing with bluetooth GPS devices, including this one, so it didn't work. Some time later on a forum I saw a hint to update my GLO software (firmware?) to 2.7. I did this at the Garmin update site (which is none too easy to find) and now it works fine again. Garmin should post some prominent notices about this, but they haven't.
MEANWHILE, while my GLO wasn't working, I bought a Bad Elf GPS with a lightning connector plug-in. That too works very well. It did not quite fit my iPad Air 2 with the Apple smart case (the hard case), so I either had to pull off a corner of the case or (eventually) get an extender cable. The GLO and Bad Elf seem to be equally good at reception. The GLO is a little slicker because it doesn't hang off the iPad, and the Bad Elf is a bit simpler to use because it's right there and you won't forget to shut it off. I wish I knew which unit had a longer lasting battery, but I haven't been able to tell.

Update: 3 years and 10 months of ownership, it conked out. I don't know if it's the battery or the device itself. I've tried using a different mini usb cable (yes, it is a mini usb) but it wont power up or charge anymore. So at $99 when I bought it originally, this comes to about $2.15/month or $25.83/year cost of ownership. I will buy again the 1st generation GLO. The 2nd gen DOES NOT have user-replaceable batteries.

    Update
2.5 years later and it still works. 5star for that. I now use a samsung a50 and the GPS works great. Wish i could buy an extra battery though, when it finally conks out.

    (old review)
my android phone is a samsung galaxy grand prime value edition, rooted. I also use bluetooth gps app to link the glo and the phone. The glo works as advertised, improving tum by turn navigation in waze and google maps over the internal gps receiver. satellite lock in just seconds after power up.

problems appear when i use a gps recorder while using waze or maps (or both). a lag is created whereby my position in the turn by turn apps is delayed by (i estimate) as much as 10 seconds. i was using ulysse speedometer as my gps recorder. it seems my phone cannot handle gps logging at 10 hz update rate while using the navigation apps. if i use the speedometer by itself, the speed reading becomes ultra responsive, and the tracks i make really become super accurate.

i solved the problem by using the "gps logger app" instead of ulysse speedometer. gps logger allows me to set the refresh rate to 1hz. this allows the turn by turn apps to run correctly and in synch with my actual position. you may ask why i would REDUCE the refresh rate as the 10hz refresh rate is the main selling point of the glo. this is because, even at 1hz, the accuracy of the glo (upto 1 meter, usually 2-3) is still better than the internal gps receiver (8 meters at best, rarely). so i still get Garmin-caliber accuracy at a rate that my hardware can handle.

Reviewed in Italy on September 16, 2018

    2) prezzo
    3) batteria proprietaria

    Garmin GLO Pregi:
    1) Supportata a pieno da Android in parte da IOS
    2) Dimensioni
    3) prezzo
    4) Batteria Standard (tipo quelle dei vecchi nokia)

    Difetti:

Io sono soddisfatto e do 5 stelle.

I hesitated before buying this as I wan't entirely convined that it for the best part of £100 it would be a significant improvement to the GPS on my phone. Well I've only been using it for a few weeks but I'm pleased with it so far.

The bluetooth link (+ using BlueTooth GPS on Android) works well, and the ability to pinpoint my location in less than a second once connected is a huge improvment. I also like the improved accuracy, and using it to feed a dashboard and GPS tracker when flying makes for some geeky in-flight entertainment (perfectly OK with a phone in flight-mode).

As a carry-case, the 'iGadgitz Black EVA Carrying Hard Case Cover for Olympus DS-40' works well - it doesn't come with one. For a self-contained extended-power solution to stick in a backpack, it fits nicely alongside a 'Power Bank Anker Astro E1' in the ever-useful 'Duronic HDC2 Portable Hard Drive Case'.

The only downside so far is that this uses a mini USB port, rather than a micro connector, so you'll need an adapter or carry the supplied mini USB cable.
