Disappointing and buggy: UPDATED
For the past few weeks I've been running the three current Bad Elf units, the 2200, 2300 and GNSS Surveyor, side by side in both slow (hiking) and faster (vehicle) situations.I've been using the 2200 for a couple of years, and its performance is reasonable and usually (but not always) within the indicated accuracy, especially in a vehicle. It has a tendency to intermittent, persistent, horizontal offsets that resolve themselves on a timescale of minutes. It is reasonably good in commercial and general aviation environments. In terms of usability it works fine with the Bad Elf iOS app.The GNSS Surveyor is targeted at quasi-static applications (as its name suggests), but is noticeably better than the 2200 in all situations that I have tested - faster to lock and much more accurate. It, too, works fine with the iOS app. I haven't yet achieved sub-meter accuracy, but it's close. It does report poorer accuracy with obstructed sky view, but the actual data are not noticeably worse than the other units in those situations. The 2300, which I have only used for a couple of weeks so far, has been a complete disappointment. Of the three, it is generally the slowest to lock, and while it generally has better horizontal accuracy than the 2200, it is nowhere near as good as the Surveyor, even in a moving vehicle. Additionally, its vertical accuracy is horrible, with wild excursions when set to GPS elevation. It also has something seriously wrong with its BT interface - it repeatedly disconnects, and every time I want to connect it I have to instruct my iOS devices to forget it and then repair. After a few attempts it seems to hold until the next time.At this time I cannot recommend the 2300. I'm contacting Bad Elf regarding its performance, but in the absence of some immediate solutions it is going back to Amazon as defective and not fit for its purpose. The GNSS Surveyor version is twice the price but appears to be in a different league in terms of performance.UPDATE 5/12/15Original unit replaced by Amazon, and the new one is much better (it has a lower serial number though). Lock is appropriately fast. Tracking accuracy is reasonable, though still poorer than the GNSS when in a moving vehicle. Bluetooth is also working. There is currently a firmware issue that results in no POIs, even if you press to record one and it says that it did - no POI is entered into the track log. Apparently that is expected to be fixed in a firmware update in the next few weeks.Upgraded to 3 stars at this time, pending new firmware.

I was SOOOO AFRAID of purchasing because of the negative reviews of acquiring a signal, but I made my purchase after flying with a crewmember who had the device.

After 16 north Atlantic crossings and 4 domestic legs the "Good" Efl had performed flawlessly.

Positioned in the rear window of the 777, with soft velcro on the unit and the ever-present hooks tab on the lower-right shelf of the window, the unit acquires a position quickly, connects to known devices automatically, and is easy to pair to a new crew iPad.

(the only PiTA is deleting shared guest iPads from memory - but that's relatively easy)

Battery life is exceptional: 10/12 hours to/from Europe. Two 8 hour crossings without a charge. Two 13 hours duty days with two-legs each.

I highly recommend this unit.

***update - Jan, 2023***

Now after using the unit for 19 months I can attest to almost perfect reliability. The battery life is exceptional - 18+ hours (VIDP to the US). Even when flying through areas of known GPS challenges (think Turkey and Afghanistan), the unit maintains a reliable and accurate signal.

I still highly recommend.

I've been looking for a replacement GPS logger for when I travel. I've not been too impressed with the quality of software used to download and convert the data down to a PC on the devices I've used before. This product works great and uses a USB drive interface to access the GPS data already in GPX format. I'm actually using it with a Chrome OS tablet. There are ways of manipulating files on the device to perform all of the functions I've needed. There is a way to change device settings using a Bad Elf web site to help make changes to a data file which can then be placed back on the device. I rarely need to do this so needing internet access for this isn't a big deal to me. It looks like I could hand edit the settings file if I really needed to. Removing old logged data is also possible my moving a data file that corresponds to a GPX log from one directory to a another. It's not as simple and clean as a software package to do everything but it's nice that I'm not dependent on someone maintaining a PC software package. I don't replace these devices very often so being future-proofed is a good thing. There is one minor caveat though. If you wait too long to download your GPX data from the device it won't have enough internal memory to create the GPX-formatted files from its internal format. I just dumped my data daily and then removed them. Doing this daily also allowed me to set a pretty high sampling rate too. Also, a lot of these features required searching around the Bad Elf web site or sending an email to their customer support. I did get my questions answered very quickly.

This unit is an excellent/compact GPS receiver for tracking walks, hikes, drives, flights (except, apparently, in Boeing 787s, whose windows block the signal!), etc. It is very flexible in its settings, and allows you to make very detailed GPX records of your movements. If you select 1-second updates, the resulting GPX file(s) will be huge for tracks of any significant length. There are ways to reduce the size of the files, but in my case, I wrote my own custom software to do it. The results were quite good, and the files were, on the average, about 1.5% the size of the original, and lost very little detail. I still have the large original files in case I need the extra fine detail. The battery life is excellent, although the battery level indicator does not appear to be linear. It's a good idea to charge the unit as soon as the first bar disappears. It acquires satellite signal quite quickly, at least compared to older models of GPS receivers, and its accuracy is very good. My only real complaint with this item is that the screen apparently scratches very easily. Mine had annoying abrasions across the screen before I even got to use it on a hike. However, it has spent most of its time since then in a case, and has not shown any new signs of wear.

Update: 2022-08-20

As of today, I've had my Bad Elf GPS Pro+ for six years. I've used it mainly for recording hikes, walks, drives, and flights, and archiving the tracks. Many of them end up on my website, showing exactly where those hikes, etc. were. Overall, it has worked very well for these tasks, so far. I did have the occasional lockup (rare, but it happens), and lost-signal events (mostly on aircraft). Signal loss occurs most often when the unit is not held close to a window on an aircraft (even letting it dangle in front of you from its lanyard, while seated in a window seat is often not sufficient to maintain a reliable signal). Also, as noted above, GPS receivers don't tend to work where windows are shaded (such as on a Boeing 787, and trains in Norway, for example)...and that applies to all receivers, not just this one.

I did have a problem a couple of years ago where the unit would occasionally (sometimes "frequently") not "find" any satellites after a long time searching. Customer support tried hard to fix the problem, which seemed to magically go away a few months later (I don't use the device much between trips). There have been a couple of firmware upgrades since then, too, and I've had no further problems with that failure. I almost always use another GPS receiver (often my iPhone) as a backup, just in case this sort of thing happens.

Very recently, I've noticed a decrease in, or complete lack of, GLONASS satellites being detected. I'm going to assume for now that this is because of the conflict in Ukraine.

Battery life is a major advantage to this unit. When I first bought it, and for most of the following six years, it has easily run all day on an overnight charge. Just in the past few days, however, it has ended the day with only one of the four battery indicators still showing. While one can obviously just pull out a backup battery or plug into an available USB power outlet where available, the full convenience of not having to charge the unit at all...or needing its charging cord immediately available...seems to be coming to an end.

My original review still stands, although my comment about the non-linear battery indicator may not be all that accurate any more. It does seem to go down fairly smoothly over time. Maybe it improved over the years of firmware updates? Also, I'm not sure how my unit got abrasions on its display back when I received it, but there is minimal additional scratching of the screen since then, despite being used on numerous hikes, drives, etc. I do normally keep it in the convenient carrying case (not included with the receiver) that fits the unit snugly, and generally protects it from the overall abuse of banging against rocks along the trail...and whatever else happens while traveling.

The Bluetooth connection with my iPhone seems to have become rather unreliable lately. Pairing can be really flaky at times. Other than being frustrating and annoying, it hasn't become a serious problem...at least not yet. If you use the device as input to an important app on a smartphone, this might be a bigger problem. I usually only need the connection to transfer tracks from the Elf to the phone.

Note: For a long time, I had difficulties saving files from the iPhone app (Bad Elf app) to Dropbox. It turned out that my light/dark mode settings resulted in "Save" being a very light gray against a white background during the day. If you're trying to save off an archived track to Dropbox (or anywhere else on that sharing page), tap the upper right part of the window, and it'll work. Or wait until dark mode kicks in, and you'll be able to see "Save" again.

Summary: this is an excellent choice if you are looking for a small, lightweight GPS receiver for the purpose of archiving the tracks of hikes and other travel. I've owned many GPS receivers, and this is easily the most convenient one for this purpose...and of course you can use it for other things, as other reviewers have described. Happy sixth "birthday" my GPS Pro+!

2nd UPDATE 2023-06-18

The GLONASS problem was solved by a firmware update. Version 3.0.0 fixed that, and positioning is very good again.
